Editorial

This journal's policy is to alternate between fully thematic issues and issues open to several topics in order to prioritise flexibility. This allows the quick publishing turn-over needed in areas and sub-areas which evolves rapidly, while providing and disseminating information in specialist areas. For instance, our next issue (11) will be devoted to technical translation and a call for papers has already been circulated by its guest editor, Jody Byrne.

This tenth issue is semi-thematic. In a first part, Nike Pokorn has edited a selection of papers on the topic of translation and Solvenia, bringing to the fore a range of Slovene perspectives on the translation industry, the use of corpora, and the translation of academic discourse. Articles are foregrounded by an introductory survey of Slovene attitudes to translation, giving a historical perspective on the importance of translation in a country using a language of limited diffusion.

The second part of the issue is devoted to corpora and audiovisual matters. Three facets of emergent or fast-growing developments in intralingual subtitling are considered. First, intralingual TV subtitling as an aid to the comprehension of linguistic variations in one language; second, respeaking through live subtitling; and finally, Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH)

Our commitment to streamed videos continues with three interviews with translation professionals. Jeremy Munday discusses the role of translation theory; Judi Palmer and Jonathan Burton, subtitlers at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, give an overview of their responsibilities; Joselia Neves, in an interview which echoes the concerns and views expressed in her article, defines SDH and places it in the wider context of accessibility to the media.

With this issue, we also welcome Pablo Romero Fresco as our new calendar of events officer. In order to update the calendar more efficiently, we are now providing an email address (events@jostrans.org) so that you can send us information about conferences, seminars, training sessions or any relevant event which you would like us to publicise.

Finally, I would like to thank all those who took part in the questionnaire we circulated at the end of 2007. We are grateful for your feedback, and to the best of our ability, we have taken your suggestions into account.? We are of course always open to more comments and look forward to receiving them.
