Abstract
What characterises the translation of crime fiction? Is it a type of specialised translation? How is the translation influenced by literary conventions? Based on the reflections done by writer and translator Jean-Patrick Manchette on the translation of crime novels (published in the Polar magazine), this article applies these reflections to the translations into Spanish and English of the best-seller Io uccido by Giorgio Faletti. The present work attempts to describe the way in which the literary genre determines most of the translation options. We will explain how, when translating crime novels, questions, such as documentation, the presence of a hybrid language or the mixture of registers, must be taken into account. At the same time, we will also explain how and why omission and simplification are two of the main procedures used in the translation of crime fiction.
